Porcelain Crowns
Why do you need a crown?
A crown can be made for any of the following reasons:
  • broken tooth
  • root canal treated tooth (for providing protection)
  • very large filling (that can no longer support the tooth)
  • reshape tooth (for appearance and/or improved bite)

A crown is also called a cap.
At times, a filling is not enough for long-term strength, yet there is quite a bit of healthy tooth. In this instance a crown or inlay is appropriate.

A bridge is prepared to replace a missing tooth, and is made of crowns that are invisibly joined together.
Making a Crown
The tooth is first prepared which includes rebuilding a part of the tooth with a crown buildup, if needed. The amount of enamel removed is exactly the thickness of the crown (about 0.5-2 mm, depending on materials used: less with all metal, more with porcelain). An impression is taken of both upper and lower jaws, from which cast is made of both the jaws. From this mold the crown is fabricated in the laboratory.
What is a crown made of?
A crown can be prepared using following materials: all porcelain, ceramic fused to metal, metal or gold alloy (We only use noble or high noble metals). Different situations often require different materials to be used. For eg. For anterior teeth all ceramic crowns give the best aesthetics compared to any other material.

Dental Bridges - Frequently Asked Questions
What is a bridge?
For the replacement of one or more natural teeth, a dental bridge can be fabricated. A bridge is an appliance that usually consists of three units-a pontic (a false tooth) fused between two crowns that are cemented onto the abutment teeth.

Crown & Bridge are fixed in the mouth using special materials by the dentist.
Who should get a bridge?
A person who has missing teeth can opt for bridge.
Will It be possible to Eat With a Dental Bridge?
Yes, it is very much possible to chew with a bridge as a dental bridge apart from imparting the aesthetics, it also restores the function.
Can the root canal treated tooth be utilized as a bridge anchor?
  • Note : Adjustment period: Initially, for few days a bridge may feel a little out of place after cementing as the surrounding teeth are adjusting with the new forces.
How to take care of a bridge?
With a bridge, it is more important than ever to brush and see your dentist regularly. The teeth and gums if get infected due to the lodgment of food debris/particles or plaque, then it requires treatment to avoid loss of bridge. We recommend flossing that help in removing bacteria from spaces between the bridge and adjacent teeth and gums. Crowns in the bridge cover most of the portion of the tooth and hence decay does not affect the bridge. Maintenance of proper oral hygiene help the bridge to last for many years.
  • Note : Adjustment period: Initially, for few days a bridge may feel a little out of place after cementing as the surrounding teeth are adjusting with the new forces.
Metal-Free Crowns ( Procera, CERCON, IPS, LAVA, ZIRCON)
Porcelain Crowns and Biologic Compatibility (Dental Allergies)
The most biologically compatible crowns are All Porcelain crowns such as Procera crowns. Research shows that these crowns have minimal allery problem as they are 99% biologically compatible.

Procera - All Ceramic Crowns
We at recommend new machined / hand-laid porcelain technology for anterior teeth. It is metal-free crown technique and it is strong enough to be universally recommend for the substitute of crowns or very large silver fillings for posterior teeth.

"Procera", new system gives the strength of the traditional gold / porcelain crown along with the magnificence and translucency of porcelain. For the front teeth it provides superior esthetics along with the adequate biting strength.

We at now have the solution - PROCERA All Ceram which is a coping made of extremely dense sintered aluminum oxide. The coping ensures great fit, optimal strength, and has the ability to transmit light without being transparent. It gives natural appearance to the tooth.

Due to the strength in the core material, Since PROCERA AllCeram has good strength in the core material it is suggested for prosthetic reconstructions anywhere in the mouth.
The Procera Abutment is created by CADD design using the Procera technique. The scanner is used to create a custom milled implant abutment that is designed by the dentist and the laboratory for a specific patient's needs. The data is then transferred by modem to the production plant in Sweden and the custom Procera Abutment is machined.
Procera® - Zirconia
Strength no longer has to be compromised to achieve extreme esthetics.Zirconia is like a much awaited CHANGE over traditional P.F.M in the present dental world.

Zirconia combines the esthetics of our patients demand with the strength and affordable prices they desire.

Laboratory tests have shown the fracture toughness and flexural strength of zirconia is significantly higher than that of alumina or any other all ceramic. Excellent strength and versatility can be achieved.

Procera Zirconia, made of Yttria Stabilized Zirconium (YZ) has considerable advantages in comparison to other dental materials: mechanical resistance, biocompatibility and a fracture toughness two times greater than Alumina.
Benefits of Procera Zirconia
  1. Uncompromised beauty
  2. Upto 3 to 16 units bridge
  3. Any number of pontics
  4. Available in all shades
  5. Outstanding compatibility
  6. Conventional cementation like PFM's.
Procera® - Alumina
Procera® (Alumina) is composed of a densely sintered high-purity aluminum oxide coping that is manufactured using CAD/CAM technology. The core has the ability to transmit light without being transparent. The secret behind Procera® is its unique combination of strength and beauty.

Extremely low fracture rates have been reported and the restorations serve for many years.
ZIRCON crowns
These are full ceramic crowns and bridges without metal reinforcement. Zircon (synthetic diamond) has exceptional rigidity. This enables us to carry out great restorations with improved mechanical forecast. Zircon is very high melting point ensures perfect stability during the heat treatment of the various ceramic layers. By utilizing Zircon, the crown or bridge will adjust perfectly. Not utilizing metal reinforcement (which the dental technician must usually mask by an opaque ceramic layer) makes it possible to produce crowns with low thickness, thus saving healthy tissue during preparation of teeth. Finally, due to this technique, the aesthetic results are excellent because the light is no longer interrupted by subjacent metal, therefore it can cross the crown and restore the natural appearance to the tooth.
3MT ESPET LavaT Crowns and Bridges
A LAVA Crown is one of the strongest all ceramic crowns available in the world. LAVA crowns are reported to have three times more tensile strength than any other style of all ceramic crown.

LAVA is an inert and biocompatible ceramic, and is the name trademarked by the 3M ESPE Company, for yttrium zirconia. Yttrium zirconia is strong enough to be used as a heat shield on the Space Shuttle. The subcoping and internal aspect of a LAVA crown is made with this material, which is manufactured by 3M ESPE. The disadvantage of LAVA is that it is monochromatic (it only comes in one color), and it is not very esthetic, by itself. LAVA resembles mother-of-pearl, visually, in it's natural state.

To make the external part of your dental crown perfectly esthetic and functional, a layer of quality dental porcelain is fused to the external aspect of your LAVA crown. This adds some translucency, vibrancy, proper shade and color, and gives your new tooth a comfortable texture.

The 3MT ESPET LavaT Crowns and Bridges system is an innovative CAD/CAM technology using a zirconium oxide base. The esthetics of Lava restorations represent the optimum in all-ceramic systems. Preparations require removal of less tooth structure, and cementation can be accomplished using proven, conventional techniques. Colorable frameworks that are thin and translucent ensure a natural and vital appearance. Lava crowns and bridges provide some of the most durable and esthetic all-ceramic restorations available today. The Zirkonia frameworks are biocompatible and exhibit the highest strength available in all-ceramic restorations.
  1. LAVA is also an excellent dental material for dental implant abutments.
  2. LavaT crowns and bridges offer the highest strength restorations to the dental industry.

METAL CROWNS (Gold, PFM, Captek)
Gold Dental Crowns
Gold crowns are often the preferred choice when the patient is not overly concerned about their appearance. Gold is extremely pliable making gold crowns a better fit than any other type. The strength and durability of the gold offers a more solid crown that will not chip or crack, which is possible with other types of crown. Gold crowns are normally used in molars, where the forces from chewing and grinding are most prevalent.
Advantages of gold crowns :
  • It is easier to prepare a tooth for a gold crown as there is minimal tooth structure removal and more of the original tooth remains intact.
  • Gold is less likely to cause wear on opposing teeth.
  • Gold is more pliable and offers a better fit.
  • Of all the crowns gold offers the healthiest environment for the gum tissue.
Porcelain and Metal Dental Crowns (PFM Crowns)
Porcelain fused to metal crowns offer a natural appearance with a better fit than a standard porcelain crown. On the down side they have a metal substructure making it difficult to replicate the translucency of natural teeth. It is possible that a darker line will appear at the edge of the crown, near the gum, as it recedes with age.
Advantages of porcelain and metal crowns:
  1. Porcelain fused-to-metal crowns offer a very natural look.
  2. They fit to the tooth very well.
Disadvantages of porcelain and metal crowns:
  • They have a metal substructure and require an opaque below the porcelain.
  • In time, a darker line may be visible at the edge of the crown.

Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is one method to fill a gap created by a missing tooth (or teeth). Dental bridge or pontic is a custom-made false tooth or teeth, that is permanently placed between two healthy teeth, filling in the area left by a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is held in place by crowns placed on the healthy teeth on each side of space to be filled.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
  • Restores your smile
  • Restores your ability to properly chew and speak
  • Maintains the shape of your face
  • Distributes the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
  • Prevents remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Helps preserve the natural function and position of the teeth
  • Restores and maintains natural bite
Types of Dental Bridges
  1. Traditional bridges
Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge.
  2. Cantilever bridges
Cantilever bridges are usually used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  3. Maryland bridges
Maryland bridges also called a resin-bonded bridges or a Maryland bonded bridges. Maryland bridges supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the back of existing teeth.
Types of Dental Bridge Materials
There are three basic types of materials for dental bridges:
  1. Porcelain fused to metal dental bridges
  2. All porcelain dental bridges
  3. All metal dental bridges (Gold)

The all porcelain dental bridges and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) dental bridges are tooth colored bridges. PFM dental bridges are usually used to restore back teeth where the forces of chewing and grinding are strongest. All porcelain dental bridges are the most aesthetic and are used almost exclusively for front teeth where the need for strength is not as critical. Gold dental bridges are the most durable and offer the most precise fit. Gold dental bridges does not chip.

The porcelain bridges used at Dental Tourism India International Dental Center include the IPS Empress Esthetics crowns from Ivoclar Vivadent and Procera NobelEsthetics from Nobel Biocare.

Note:
Preparation and the placement of the temporary bridge and the bonding of the permanent bridge may cause minor tenderness in the area. Some individuals may experience sensitivity in teeth. This sensitivity will disappear gradually over a few days to weeks.
Care for Dental Bridges
Dental bridges require the same regular and consistent home and professional dental care, as your natural teeth to prevent decay at the tooth-dental crown junction. For the longevity of the restorations, following tips are advised:
  • Brush at least twice around the bridge with a soft toothbrush focusing on the area where the bridge meets the gum line as at the gum line harmful bacteria can be harbored to cause decay and gum disease.
  • Flossing twice daily is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Avoid chewing sticky items such as toffees, gum, grainy rolls and tough food from this area.
  • Consult your dentist for regular professional check-ups and maintenance of oral hygiene.
